Associate Artistic Director (Part Time) – Job Description

Rivendell Theatre Ensemble (RTE) elevates the lives of women through the power of theatre. We cultivate a creative home for audiences and artists to explore untold women’s stories while fostering an environment in which women theatre artists can thrive. RTE is currently searching for a self-motivated theater artist who will partner with our Artistic Director in the development of artistic programming that is impactful and reflective of the diverse population of women who make up our city of Chicago.

RTE produces a season consisting of three full productions and additional auxiliary programming including staged readings, workshops, and educational programming. RTE values the lived experience of our ensemble members and staff and encourages professional/individual development. As such, we anticipate the qualified candidate will help identify areas of expertise to employ as well as growth opportunities to explore during their engagement with RTE.

Position: Associate Artistic Director (Part Time)

The Associate Artistic Director (AAD) will support artistic operations of the theatre and assist the Artistic Director in maintaining the highest possible production and programming standards, while presenting as a consistent public face of RTE both locally and nationally. Reporting to the Artistic Director, the AAD will work closely with the Managing Director, RTE Staff, Artistic Ensemble, and the Board. The AAD should possess the following competencies:

  • Excellent communication and public speaking
  • A strong collaborator
  • A commitment to leading with equity, diversity, and inclusion principles
  • An understanding of the Chicago theatre community and the city itself
  • An ability to adapt to changing circumstances with a sense of humor
  • A generous advocate for the work of others

We are prepared to shape this position to the strengths and interests of the candidate, however the essential functions of the AAD may include:

  • Partner with Artistic Director and Literary Director to research potential future productions and play an integral role in season selection
  • Develop tangible equity, diversity, and inclusion goals and principles to be reflected in the work RTE produces and communicate those efforts throughout the ensemble
  • Interface with production directors to analyze per-show needs and support casting, particularly in terms of recruiting diverse talent
  • Research and facilitate community engagement opportunities such as the design and implementation of lobby displays, town hall discussions and aligned education programs
  • Assist with\substitute for Artistic Director when needed (board meetings, funder meetings, select rehearsals, curtain speeches or house announcements etc.)


  • Average 10-15 hours per week
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to permit acceptance of external or internal acting and artistic roles that do not interfere with essential functions of the position


Compensation:  Annual salary $20,000; anticipated work load, average 15 hours per week
