A Celebration of New Plays by Women
Fresh Produce is Rivendell Theatre Ensemble's annual new play development series. Each summer we select several projects by women theatre artists, provide them intensive, developmental workshops, a group of highly skilled collaborative artists and share the work with the community.
This summer, Rivendell is honored to produce Fresh Produce 2009 as part of the University of Chicago's Summer Incubator collective, Summer, INC. This unique summer residency program promotes and supports the creation of new work and the groups selected represent the city’s boldness in its artistic approaches. PROJECTS
Room(s)
By Ann Shanahan
Directed by Megan Carney
"All I could do was offer you an opinion upon one minor point- a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction..."
— Virginia Woolf, A Room of Ones' Own
Room(s) is an adaptation of Virginia Woolf's series of essays compiled as A Room of Ones' Own. Borrowing the basic premise of a lecture delivered to a gathering of women on the subject of Women and Fiction, this piece develops the metaphor of creativity and architecture by processional staging through several rooms of a house. Room(s) simultaneously argues for and provides the space of security and autonomy advocated by Woolf in her groundbreaking essays.
Stephen's Psalm

Stephen's Psalm chronicles the real life story of a father struggling to reconnect to his estranged son before his son goes off to war. The father journeys back to the source of his grief — the site where he lost his brother in the Vietnam War — in search of the key to unlock his son's heart.
